Hi Guys

Anyone running 3G on Linux? I have a colleague with Debian on his laptop that's wondering how to get it running. He's considering Telecom's 3G offering. He's also wondering if MTC's personnel will be more knowledgeable.

Regards

Hi Riaan

I'm using Telecoms EVDO on Gentoo linux and it works fine. I can post a little HOWTO later on ihow to make work on linux, though there are many tutorials out there that your friend could use as a guide.

Correction I am running windows because Linux does not have a helper application that makes things user friendly, to get it to work is one thing to make it end user friendly is another, One click in Windows and I am connected, don't get me wrong I could script this in Linux but then I have to use something else to send SMS's not cool.
Linux must be easy to use before it will reach the Desktop as an alternative.

Gents,

If you've not sorted this out yet, have a look at "https://forge.vodafonebetavine.net/", specifically the VMC Card driver.

I've been using it since before version 1 with Ubuntu and Fedora, with much success on MTC's 3g offering (using the Huawei E220; no idea of Telecom's service) , including the latest Ubuntu 8.04.

Simple and straightforward.

HTH.

Hi @ All,

I have tested 3G on OpenSuse 10.x and 11 and it works. There are some issue's with the Desktop icon but if you have su rights then there will be no problem.

I have tested the PCMCIA Card and the USB Telecom Adapter with a Contract SIM and Tango. Both work.

I know this is a late response, but in Debian you need usb-modeswitch and the internet connectivity settings. In Ubuntu there is a package called mobile-broadband-provider-info to which I added the settings for MTC:pre-paid, so that you can just click and connect like in Windows, I don't know the settings for MTC:contract, Leo or Telecom.

What about sending sms's ?

I had a program called Gammu as a frontend to wammu that let you do that as well as a few other things phone related.

It's actually a program for managing your cellphone, sortof like that Nokia Suite thing… my phone is the only Symbian phone that isn't compatible thanks to how it was made and I don't have a 3G device like netman so I can't test it but I'm sure it would work pretty much the same way, you should try it.

Let us know if it works?
