Hi all

Running out of disk-space on my Gentoo partition, I am deciding to urgently move /usr/portage/distfiles to my external drive --- which should be mounted each time I want to do an emerge or so.

This unfortunately brings me to a stupid question, please bear with me for a few seconds: where else should I inform the system about the new location of the distfiles, which may look like /media/disk/linux/distfiles, or does it suffice to do a symbolic link of the kind

ln -s /usr/portage/distfiles /media/disk/linux/distfiles

where /usr/portage/distfiles would be empty.

         Cheers,
                     Isak Davids

A symbolic link is a possibility, of course. Better look for "PORTDIR" in /etc/make.conf. You can point it to any directory which contains the portage tree.

Another thing is to do some house cleaning in your portage tree, especially in distfiles. You don't need tarballs of the last 10 versions of a program. The last two will probably do.
