Check if your kernel has support for it. Compile and install the kernel module, and insmod it.

make menuconfig --> Device Drivers --> Network Device Support --> Ethernet 1000 Mbit --> <M>   Intel(R) PRO/1000 PCI-Express Gigabit Ethernet support

make modules_install

(But I see you have probably done this already..... ;-) )

You might need to do an ifconfig specifically for the controller before the ifconfig -a will list it.

If you check your dmesg, you should find that it has detected the module and loaded it.

Just try setting up the interface with the  eth reference shown.

eg (If your dmesg showed an eth4 as follows):

eth4: Tigon3 [partno(N/A) rev a200 PHY(5722/5756)] (PCI Express) 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet 00:21:5a:50:de:23
eth4: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIirq[0] ASF[0] WireSpeed[1] TSOcap[1]
eth4: dma_rwctrl[76180000] dma_mask[64-bit]

Your ifconfig -a will not show the device, till you specifically set it up.

I hope this helps....
