Hi all. I'm looking for an open source file backup solution. The backup server will be running Linux and the clients (whose data needs to be backed up) are Windows machines.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for in terms of overall solution...

I have played around with rsync clients for Windows and Linux; this seems to work well.  Might just be a bit of a pain to set up, but could potentially help you do very efficient backups.

Hi,
I came across this website http://www.rsnapshot.org/. I didnt look at it too closely and as it is rsync based i remembered arnolds suggestion so it might tie in with whatever u have worked out. hope it helps!

The scenario is that there will be a couple of windows machines and a Linux server. What I have in mind is that all data from certain folders on the windows machines should be pulled to the Linux server automatically after certain period of time then from there the data can be place on backup media i.e. tapes, DVDs etc. I hope that's clearer.

Thanks for the suggestion Zenith. I'm having a look at rsnapshot now and it looks like it could do the trick.

Deltacopy which uses rsync on a 32 bit Windows is the best solution I've used on a Windoze machine. Like a lot of 64 bit software the rsync component hasnt been rewritten yet. Delta sends an email to say what was updated etc and as its only updayting changed files, its very low on bandwidth/resources. It also doesnt need cygwin and so forth

Take a look at : http://www.bacula.org/

Clients exist for most Commercial OS's. Works well in a multiplatform setup.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I have resorted to using DeltaCopy. It works well with windows machines and is very easy to use.
