Well its the 5 March beginning of the month and its a Thursday in WINDHOEK. Usually time for a local meetup with the local Beer [not free] and talk about free stuff especially Software. Not that we are Freetards or anything.[/b] It is also rainy which maybe puts people off. If its not too sloshy a couple of us will head to Thuringerhof [not free] and get sloshed.

We did meet last month ala this string....

Just quoting from a previous mail to all from Steve...

"LUG Meeting

Venue: Beergarden of Thueringer Hof
Date: 07.02.2008
Time: After work

See you all , till later"

Any chance we can restart our Windhoek meetings? I had been off the drinking circuit for about 9 months, or at least not adding to it by attending the WLUG. Possibly many folk have continued meanwhile. What about a meeting for tomorrow? I will try and be their with a colleague. Same venue as quote. Tomorrow is first Thursday of the month BTW Smiley

I guess it's worth a try.

I'll pitch up just after 8.

Oh well....that was a starter! Good to see some of the folk! 5 in all. I was thinking to put a small ad into the Namibian for next time...see if we can boost membership or fresh perspectives or whatever we call it.

The Thuringerhof, while having some nice points and fresh beer is now a little pricey....N$15 a pint is not the way I remember it and fuel prices down and all that.

Can we think of another venue. Roof of Africa is a bit off-central, Thurstenhof maybe, KaiserKrone maybe, Zum Wurt not a good idea....

ANy others?

4th of June will be a Thursday... anybody still reading this? If yes, I crave your company Tongue

We can also meet at my place in case we cannot agree on any drinking hole. Just leave me a message at pgallert-at-polytechnic.edu.na.

Am I alone at struggling with the use of linux Wink I haven't seen any posts around the forum for quite some time.

Would be good to have a bit more activity around here. I did miss the get together, unfortunately.

BTW i just installed the new'ish Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope...(KDE)
I think it will be best to invest in another PC, still having problems getting proper graphics from the onboard Intel 82865G chipset. Other than that all looks pretty impressive.

I have a Linux test partition on my laptop (and home pc). Here I try all sorts of distros to see if I like it better than my current favourite, Gentoo Linux. Last week I installed Kubuntu 9.04 x86_64 (Jaunty Jackalope) into this partition. Good news and bad news: Good news is that the KDE4 NetworkManager plasmoid is included in the release (finally), but the bad news is that like in 8.10 it does not work properly. I got it to work with wired+DHCP (default) and with WiFi, but static IPs is a no-go.

With 8.10 I removed KNetworkManager and the NetworkManager back-end and installed WICD that just works easier and better than Networkmanager IMHO. If I can't crack this problem soon I'll do the same with Kubuntu 9.04.

So, for me Kubuntu is not quite yet there yet (I won't use Ubuntu, ever, as Gnome offends my sense of aesthetics and ergonomics). So I still stick to Gentoo that I can configure as I like.

About your Intel GMA. I have the same problem on my office pc. I can get all the effects, but it slows the GUI down to irritating levels. And this is on a Core 2 system. Even my old Sempron Mobile + GeForceGo 6150 laptop performs better. So I just have to turn the compositing off. :-( Solution: I feel that if one buys a new computers one should see that you have a decent graphics card. This means at least a mid level nVidia (or perhaps ATI) card. The other options will just disappoint.

See you some time.

Let us all have a meeting in July, shall we? I miss our meetings.
