I read something in the papers today that schoolnet has or is busy closing down? Anyone know why? So nobody supporting the schools any more? Meaning they will have to rely on Windows? Also, another question, does that Freedom Toaster still exist there in Katutura? If so, who owns and updates that machine?
Can Linux users of Namibia not go and build their own Toaster and place somewhere strategically like Maerua Mall or so?

Yes my friend the biggest and most successful open source project in Namibia has been shut down by the Ministry of Education, is was done on the 25th of March 2009 already, but everybody was kept in the dark. Now as a member Civil Society and a volunteer (in the true sense no gain) of the Schoolnet establishment that had spend many hours of coaching and guiding the future and present IT experts of Namibia which some now have posts in the echelons of State and private enterprises I ask myself was this in vain. ( I guess not) There are various complaints made by the Ministry of shortcomings of Schoolnet, do they fill this void that they have caused , I would like some of the Kids on the Block program whom are now employed to respond to this and ask the aspiring new students where would they get the solid foundation that they got from Schoolnet. Schoolnet Namibia was much more that an ISP for schools it was a place for young Namibian people to come and experience the first world technologies that are available. So we have created a number of Government controlled institutions but I doubt that will ever have the spirit and comradeship that was SCHOOLNET. To all my Comrades this is indeed a sad day but “We will overcome”
Yours in Open Source

Okay, so it's been moved then. A few years back it was in Katutura, think Schoolnet premises. At the time the software available was somewhat outdated, not the latest distros.

I think you could contact Laurent Evrard at the Poly to find out what the status of the toaster is.
