Does anyone have any pointers to being able to connect a Laptop running Linux [Ubuntu I seem to recall] to the Internet using a Bluetooth device, Modem script and  /or WVDial or similar. I dont have the full details here but I imagine its a 3G capable Mobile Phone, although what sort etc Im not sure.
I was actually called by a Technical Advisor to one of our major cell-phone companies who has a customer going ballistic about lack of Linux support. I understand his headache as there is very little on this type of connectivity.

Any pointers at all would be great.

Many of the connection devices are designed for Windows (such as the one provided by MTC.)  With a cellphone I think it really depends on what your cellphone runs (windows mobile will give you trouble I would guess.)  If you can get the cellphone and the linux computer to connect to each other, one should be able to get it to share, though one may need to install some networking packages onto ubuntu, perhaps a samba server or something like that?  Of course you would need a connection to install the required packages in the first place.

I did try to get a htc phone with windows mobile to connect to ubuntu without success, but I didn't want to install anything just to get that to work.

I haven't played with bluetooth devices, but I have managed  to connect to the internet using a Huawei 3G device from telecom and I think MTC also use the same device. I  can also connect to the internet using my Nokia E51 cellphone. These are, however connected to the Linux PC by a USB cable.

Basically you need to make sure the "USB to Serial" and some GSM device drivers are compiled in your Linux kernel. Most modern distros do have these compiled in already. I then use pppd to connect either from the command line or using a GUI front end like kppp in KDE.

If this is relevant, I can post a more details on how accomplished this.

Could you please post more details on how to set-up the telecom-3g EVDO Huawei device on networking. I have this device, but so far could only succesfully use it in Mandriva and its baby, PCLinuxOS.

For the interested individuals, on Mandriva & PCLinuxOS I do it through the mighty Mandriva Control Center (MCC). Under connection type I go for "Analog telephone modem", then I set-up the modem as "manual choice", serial port something like "/dev/ttyUSB0" , then I select the provider as "Unlisted - edit manually", then I set the following parameters:
Connection name = telecom3g
Phone number = #777
Login ID = ***@telecom.na
Password = ***
Authentication = CHAP

The above does the job! However, I could never get it working on my (K)Ubuntu OSs. I will be greatfull if I can get some help.

Why so complicated. There is a progam called umtsmon. It works great with MTC 3G.
