I would like to know if there is any active promotion of Linux & open source software going on in Windhoek or Namibia? Word of mouth? Website? Forum (this one)? Posters? Free CD's? Curious to know, not aware of anything.

Okay, I'm guilty, not really doing anything myself, but am still a newbie to Linux, my old & slow Laptop currently running Fluxbuntu & Xubuntu, my office computer still running #$%^&* Windows  Angry (which of course causes the PC to freeze at least once a day). But am very interested in Linux and open source, so working on converting.  Grin

Hi!  Can I suggest that you make contact with the Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA - http://www.fossfa.net) to pursue such possibilities in Namibia?  Thanks tatejoris

Yeah, I usually make posters and put them up at the Polytechnic of Namibia, especially in the school of IT and hand out loads of Ubuntu CDs to students and lecturers every time a new release comes out. The first time I did it I gave out more than 40 copies of a disc image I got off the net. Another time Canonical posted me a package of decent looking CDs for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I also go around helping the students with it when they get stuck or want some software as I've made a small repository of software packages at home…

I burned some 600 live CDs (slackware, backtrack, knoppix) for my students in the past years. Using backtrack is compulsory in my networking courses but I currently do not teach.

And whenever someone complains of viruses I recommend a proper OS...

Is it also required for the networking courses lectured by others? That would be quite interesting for sure, although I don't actually study networking.

In our curricula,

Bachelor of IT: Systems Administration and Networking
Bachelor (Honours): Computer Networking

almost every course is delivered dually on Windows and Linux. The networking lab only has Linux as OS. We also hav a small Linux User Group at Polytechnic. meeting Wednesdays in the early afternoon.
